Michael Parenti is a near-legendary figure in American progressive politics. Born and raised in an Italian-American working class family in New York City, he worked for a number of years after high school before returning to school, earning an M.A. from Brown University and a Ph.D. in political science from Yale University. He has authored 25 books covering politics, history, empire, wealth, class power, culture, ideology, media, environment, gender and ethnic life, including The Face of Imperialism (2011); God and His Demons (2010); Contrary Notions: The Michael Parenti Reader (2007); The Assassination of Julius Caesar (2003); and Democracy for the Few, 9th edition (2010). Portions of his writings have been translated into some 20 languages and his books and articles have been used extensively in college courses.

In “Rational Wars and Deliberate Deceptions,” Dr. Parenti will argue that U.S. global wars are not ‘mistakes’ nor ‘misguided.’ In fact, they serve the giant corporate powers quite well. U.S. political and military intervention throughout the world displays not confusion but impressive consistency regarding who is supported and who is demonized and targeted. Specifically, it comes down to who plays along with global capitalism and who dares to resist. His talk will also deal with the way critical analysis is dismissed as ‘conspiracy theory’ and how public discourse is manipulated by fear-inducing deceptions.

The Saturday morning keynote address will be followed in the afternoon by ten “Peace & Justice Workshops” on such topics as the current crisis in Syria, human trafficking, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, immigration reform, modernizing our state tax system, and StratCom’s integral role in drone warfare and illegal surveillance.

Early registration for this one-of-a-kind, once-a-year-only conference—which includes breakfast and lunch—is $30 per person ($35 after October 9). So that no one is turned away by the registration cost, however, a $10 per person rate is readily available for students and lower-income citizens. We want everyone to have an opportunity to hear Michael Parenti.
